Play With Your Food Collaborative Project

I am beyond excited to share this whimsically playful cookie collaboration. A group of my dear cookie friends came together to go against mama's admonitions not to play with our food and decided to have a little fun.  The only guidelines were that the subject be something to play with, either toys or games.  As the reveal date drew near, we began to share our projects and the excitement started to grow.  Talk about bringing your A game - These ladies came to play!

So many delightful details: lots of classic games, nostalgic favorites and even a couple of new ones.   Many of them are actually interactive, which adds an extra dimension of fun to this project. Take a look at the fantastic cookies in this Play With Your Food collaboration and be sure to follow these talented artists' Facebook pages to see the rest of their outstanding work.  Enjoy!

The many faces of Wooly Willy.

Four layers of royal icing create a wall to contain loose sanding sugar. Red licorice acts as the stylus to move the "iron filings." (Full disclosure - that licorice is only a prop.  I painstakingly moved the sanding sugar around using a small paintbrush.)

More royal icing walls built up to create these mazes.  Drop in a silver dragee and let the fun begin!

Things Are Not as They Appear

Some lessons you have to learn the hard way.  At least I do, it seems.  My last post featured these cream and pale sea foam hot air balloons with a shot of deep burgundy.  Nice enough.  So what's the problem? Wellllll... They were supposed to complement the invitation below:

Insert needle scratch.  What the what the? Why are the colors and details so... off? Turns out the reason for the disconnect is because I was using the file sent by my client instead of a hard copy. So what was reading as burgundy on my computer monitor was actually a soft pink. That dark band at the top of the basket was in reality sweet rose detailing. My angular cross-hatch netting should have been round and lacy.

Unfortunately for me, I didn't know all of this when I sent off a proof to my client, who had to break it to me that these were, basically, ALL WRONG. I felt terrible!  But luckily my first draft hadn't taken too long to complete and my client still had faith in me.  I asked her to send me the actual invitation and got back to the drawing board to attempt to get it right.  Here are the new balloons based on the actual invite.
A wee bit closer, no? Let's compare:
The moral of the story is:  Get the hard copy!

Tutorial: What A Difference A Dot Makes

I was working on an order for five dozen mini makeup cookies and decided to keep it simple.
The problem with keeping it simple is there's not a lot of smoke and mirrors to distract you from any flaws.  Like imperfect circles for instance.  My quick fix for wonky circles? Camouflage the crap out of them with a decorative dot border.  Check it out.
This little blusher = wonky city.
To correct shape add evenly spaced dots using a number 1 tip so they create a more perfect circle shape. Let dry.
Come back with your number 1 tip and fill in blank spaces.  Booya!  Perfect-er circle with a decorative border.
Add a pretty little heart detail and you're in business.
