A Cookie About Nothing

I don't know how I get so lucky to have some of the coolest customers ever.  Like this one who ordered a dozen Seinfeld inspired cookies to celebrate her 37th birthday.  I mean, how cool is that?  I got a little carried away because Seinfeld is one of my all time favorite shows, so she got half a dozen bonus cookies because I just couldn't stop myself.  Too many classic moments to cookify.  See if your favorites made the cookie cut.  Enjoy!

We're Big In China

Can I tell you how surprised I was to open an email from Little Thing Magazine, a darling Chinese publication that features all sorts of fun, bright and girly things throughout their beautiful pages.  They contacted Oh, Sugar! to see if we'd be interested in a little feature and interview in their 4th Anniversary issue - all about sweet things.  I couldn't shoot off the yes email fast enough!  Well, we just received our copy in the mail today and couldn't be more please with the beautiful four page spread they gave us.  (I have to assume I sound verrrrry smart in Chinese) Take a look at the pages and thanks again Little Thing.  We love your magazine! Enjoy!

Didn't know I was fluent in Chinese, did ya?
The one question I remember:  What is your favorite Little Thing?  My kiddo, Abby.

Give 'Em The Old Razzle-Dazzle

Oh my god.  This set of cookies was a nightmare.  Night. Mare. At one point I really considered throwing them out and starting again because I was running into so many problems. But since this was a last minute order and I had about a day and a half to get 4 dozen done, that wasn't even an option.  I had to make them work.   How?  Smoke and mirrors, my friend.  Smoke and mirrors. Wondering what I'm talking about?  See for yourself.

I don't know if it's the summer heat or what but recently I've been running into a lot of nasty surprise in my icing like color bleeding and sunken sections.  I use a heat gun on all of my cookies (my favorite crutch) which gives me virtually crater free cookies with a nice sheen, but even after using my trusty tool I still had cookies with crazy collapsed sections.  And the color bleed.  My god, the color bleed.  One second we're good to go and 10 minutes later the darker colors start seeping into my sweet baby pinks.  What to do?!  This looks terrible!  I'm not exaggerating.  Take a gander.
I decided not to freak and see what I could do to salvage them. That song from the musical "Chicago" kept running through my head: "Give 'em the old razzle-dazzle.  Razzle-dazzle them." And as I started to add more detailing and sparkle, they started to take shape and my eye was pulled away from all of their flaws. These might actually turn out ok! See what some simple outlining and a lot of disco dust can do to turn your cookie disasters into cookie triumphs.
Imagine the initial frustration times 24!

Play With Your Food Collaborative Project

I am beyond excited to share this whimsically playful cookie collaboration. A group of my dear cookie friends came together to go against mama's admonitions not to play with our food and decided to have a little fun.  The only guidelines were that the subject be something to play with, either toys or games.  As the reveal date drew near, we began to share our projects and the excitement started to grow.  Talk about bringing your A game - These ladies came to play!

So many delightful details: lots of classic games, nostalgic favorites and even a couple of new ones.   Many of them are actually interactive, which adds an extra dimension of fun to this project. Take a look at the fantastic cookies in this Play With Your Food collaboration and be sure to follow these talented artists' Facebook pages to see the rest of their outstanding work.  Enjoy!

The many faces of Wooly Willy.

Four layers of royal icing create a wall to contain loose sanding sugar. Red licorice acts as the stylus to move the "iron filings." (Full disclosure - that licorice is only a prop.  I painstakingly moved the sanding sugar around using a small paintbrush.)

More royal icing walls built up to create these mazes.  Drop in a silver dragee and let the fun begin!
